Review: Sonic The Hedgehog

I’m going to skip the preamble and get straight into it. The original Sonic The Hedgehog still holds up. The gameplay is still fun, the levels are still wonderfully designed, and the special stages are still infuriating. The PSN version doesn’t change any of this, with the game transferring across extremely well, and a couple of new bells and whistles added for good measure.

Sonic The Hedgehog reminds me why the franchise gained popularity in the first place, with a game that is undoubtedly one of the finest platformers of the 2D generation. Boasting an impressive sense of speed, a wonderful soundtrack, and some incredibly tight controls, it is a far cry from the games starring the blue hedgehog that we have to deal with these days. The game is still a load of fun, and the PSN port doesn’t do anything to put this in jeopardy. It runs smoothly, and the controls and sound certainly don’t seem to be wonky in any way, shape or form. It’s simply a good port. The PSN version adds save states, which makes things bearable, especially when you get to one of the more frustrating special stages. It certainly alleviated some of my frustrations when trying to get at those chaos emeralds.

Sonic The Hedgehog is great, and the PSN version doesn’t change this in the slightest. If you were a fan of the game when it first came out, then you’ll likely still be a fan of it now.

    Sonic 1 is an example of a game that was in the right place at the right time. Back in 1991 it was a graphical showcase for Sega and featured a sense of speed that wasn’t typical for this genre. At that time it allowed people to overlook the poor design of later levels. You have a character that can sprint and fly in the air, but is ultimately confined to walking a few steps to the next carefully timed jump or attack. You can call this difficulty, I call it frustration given the free enjoyment of the early zones that is robbed from you later on. I’d be willing to give the sequels 4 stars, this is more deserving of 2 stars if you have no nostalgia for it. Gameplay aside I agree with you that this is a good port and the save state feature is a welcome addition.
