Check out this teaser trailer for Treachery in Beatdown City, an indie game coming to Vita via PSM from Shawn Allen @aNuChallenger. The game is an 8-bit brawler RPG clearly inspired by retro arcade greats like Double Dragon, and the chiptune soundtrack fits perfectly with the on-screen pixel brutality.
What I’m gathering from Allen and his time developing Treachery in Beatdown City is that he is carefully constructing the world of Beatdown City and it’s characters with an unusual attention to detail, right down to the connections the protagonists have to one another. From reading his blog entries about the game, I’ve learned that the characters themselves have come from sketches he’s managed to make of real people walking the streets.
As for the man, Shawn Allen. Reading his personal bio is like reading my personal bio, all except for the part about having a collegiate reading level since the age of 10. I’ve never been that good at reading. His favorite games list reads like the contents of my retro games drawer. You know you’re over 30 if your games are in a drawer.
