NYCC Impressions – Mega Man Universe

There were many sights to behold at this year’s New York Comic Con, including paid cosplaying babes, anime series you’ve never heard of, and unpaid cosplaying… girls. Located in the middle of the madness of the main exhibition hall was Capcom’s booth. There was a considerable amount of traffic clogging the lanes around Capcom, and most of it was to get a glimpse of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Off to the side of the big-screened MvC3 bouts was Mega Man Universe. Along with extensive graphical upgrades, the main feature of Mega Man Universe is its customizable options. From the levels to the Mega Men themselves, players will be able to create and share their ideas with others, creating a network full of original Mega Man ideas; a Mega Man Universe, if you will.
Playing the game, I saw about 5 different Mega Men to choose from, all with different stats (LE, WE, Shot, Move, Jump). Each one of these stats is based on how the Mega Men were constructed. Yes, Mega Man Universe boasts the ability to create your own Mega Man. The representative at the booth couldn’t reveal exactly how many customizable parts there will be, but it seemed like the different sections include the head, body, arms, and legs of your Mega Man. Ryu and Arthur will both be playable characters, which means you can equip your custom Mega Man with Ryu’s arms and Arthur’s legs. The result would likely be a Haduken shooting, double jumping Maverick Hunter. Though nothing official could be announced at the time, the Capcom representative hinted at the ability to create your own bosses.
Also, the game comes packaged with an updated version of Mega Man 2. The customizable levels give the game about as much Play, Create, and Share appeal as ModNation and LBP. I know Chris talked about making an entire level of just disappearing blocks. I wonder how many SMB levels will pop up in the first week. I’m just hoping someone (I suck at modding) makes a legitimate Ghouls and Ghosts level. What ideas do you have for a Mega Man level?
