What I liked:
- Great presentation, keeping that old-school feel.
- Music sounds great. Same as the original.
- Good pinball physics.
- Up to 8 players can play using 1 PSP.
What I disliked:
- The scoreboard is cut off in Portrait mode.
- I wish Portrait mode was zoomed out enough to see the full board.
- Can’t find a good way to hold the PSP in Portrait mode.
- No way to access menu from the game, you have to back the whole way out.
Pinball Dreams is the type of game that sucks hours away from you. The great thing is there is nothing fancy about it, as it is a port of the 1992 Amiga version, and nonetheless it is still a blast to play. The music is catchy and will stick with you throughout the day. I have been humming the Beatbox level’s music while I type this review. The tables are fairly simple, but I tend to like that. If the table has too much going on I tend to lose the ball more often.
I would recommend playing this game in Landscape mode though. If you play in the Portrait setting you lose some of the scoreboard and I found that distracting. I also wish that it was zoomed out further so that the camera didn’t have to shift in that mode. The controls are easy to learn, but make sure you look them over before going into a table as you won’t be able to view the menu once in the game.
While Sony’s Pinball Heroes may offer a richer experience, I still found this game quite fun and enjoyable. Although it isn’t really fair to compare that to this since Pinball Dreams is a minis title. And for the price you are paying you are getting four tables that are all fun to play. The classic-game fan inside of you will love this title for sure.
