ESRB Watch – Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection

*Update: First I can’t spell its Skarlet (with one ‘t’ not two). Second, the compatibility pack for the Skarlet DLC is currently not up on the US store. I’ve put out some feelers to see if I can get some information.

*Update 2: Upon purchasing the Skarlet DLC and installing it, it seems to have come with some interface updates. Including a popup window at the beginning of the game that checks for online content and then links to the store. If you scroll through the available packs one of them is the compatibility pack for Skarlet. It does indeed contain two classic skins for Sektor and Cyrax. Also I’m confirming that it is $0.00.

Last month, Warner Bros. officially announced that a long rumored, downloadable kollection (that’s with a ‘k’) of the first three Mortal Kombat arcade titles – Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – would soon be available on PSN and XBLA. The price for the downloadable is being reported as $9.99 in the US and £6.29 in Europe. While the release date for the kollection is still listed as this summer, the ESRB has just rated the product (spoilers: its rated M for Mortality). In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple decades (or you’ve been too busy playing Street Fighter 2), Mortal Kombat is a fighting game featuring over-the-top violence and attacks. Its also the game that patented finishing moves, such as Fatalities.

Its also important to note that MK:AK (god, I love that acronym!) is not a high definition remake. Warner Bros. stated in its previous press release that the kollection would be an “arcade-perfect port”. So get ready for all the glitches you remember from the original cabinets, like that palette swap glitch that turned Kitana into Skarlett.

Speaking of Skarlet and other MK related news, the newest character in the Mortal Kombat roster will be offered as DLC for The Mortal Kombat (aka Mortal Kombat 9) next Tuesday, June 21st, as part of the PSN store update, and is priced at $4.99 in the US store (no word yet on how much it will cost in the EU). Product-reviews.net is reporting that the Skarlet DLC will also be releasing alongside a compatibility pack that will allow MK9 owners to fight against people who have the DLC. The compatibility pack will also include two classic kostumes for Cyrax and Sector and is free.  While were on that subject, three more characters have been announced as DLC including Kenshi, the recently announced Rain, and a fourth currently unknown character. NetherRealms and Ed Boon have also hinted that a plethora of alternate costumes for all of the characters are on the way as well. And thank god too, I’ve been waiting to make Styker’s hat turn backwards since MK9 released!

Here’s hoping a more firm release date for the arcade kollection is forthcoming. As always, as soon as we know, you will too!
