New Mini: 5-in-1 Arcade Hits

New minis seem to be popping up every day now, so it will take something different for one of them to catch my eye. 5-in-1 Arcade Hits certainly is trying something different, global leaderboards.

Before I go on about that I will first introduce you to the game, well games. 5-in-1 Arcade Hits, as you can tell, is a game collection. Rather than making all the games for one audience, Grip Games has given a little something for everyone. There is a brick breaking game, Tetroid, for the core gamer, Memory, Slide Puzzles, and Solitaire for the casual fans, and last but not least 8-ball.

Because of limitations of the Minis platform, most games are missing things we love like online leaderboards and online/adhoc multiplayer. While this game has neither, it does do some things that will make you miss those features a little less. Being a PSP title, the game will not have Trophies, but the developers have added in some in-game medals for completionists. These medals also tie into the global leaderboards.

The limitation of not having global leaderboards still exists in-game, but the team at Grip Games has figured out a way around that. Here is a quick run down of how this works. Codes are generated based on your medals and scores. You then take the code you get and enter it on the Grip Games website, a profile on their site is needed (it is free to join). After that you will have a profile card with all of the medals you earn and your scores will be on there for everyone to see. Think of it as a mini PSN profile. You can then easily post this info to your Facebook or Twitter account. All of Grip’s future games will use this system. Hopefully Sony takes note and implement something similar for all minis titles.

Multiplayer is another thing this mini title has that most lack. It is still the same “hot seat / pass and play” type, but that is the best we can ask for in a mini. Tetroid has a versus mode where one player uses the D-Pad and the other player uses the face buttons. This might be a little weird on PSPgo systems, but classic PSPs should have no problems. 8 ball has your standard pass and play multiplayer, which is perfect for that type of game.

5-in-1 Arcade Hits should be out in the coming months. We don’t have an exact date or price yet, but when we will do I will be sure to let everyone know. If you want more info on the game or Grip Games themselves, pick your poison: Twitter| Dev Blog | Facebook
