We loved VectorTD, heck it is probably my favorite game currently out on minis. Now everyone in North America will get to battle vectoids, starting next week!

What I liked:

Classic Tower Defense gameplay, with a twist here and there.

Crisp vector graphics look really good on either PSP or PS3.

Enough maps and different with ways to play to keep you coming back.

What I disliked:

If you have a lot of towers and power-ups in one area it gets cluttered.

No highscores or fast-forward.

Many of you may know Candystand from the web. They have one of the most popular flash game sites out there. But this is there first entry into the minis space and VectorTD tries to set its self out from the pack. The game may start off a bit slow, but by the end you will be making every move like it is your last.

The game is simple like most tower defense games. Choose one of eight maps and try to last 50 rounds without running out of lives. The formula is also similar to most games, there are different colored enemies, called vectoids, and towers of the same color will do more damage to them. After five rounds a boss vectoid shows up, and if you can destroy it you gain a bonus item. These can be cashed in for things like damage enhancers and range modifiers.

Your towers also have different effects on the vectoids. There are the blue towers, you will learn to love these, which can slow down a vectoid. There are also powerful red towers which shoot out homing missiles, another staple that you will be using a lot. You can upgrade each tower, adding more damage and extending their range. The graphics on-screen are vector-style and there are lots of particle effects. Although if you have a lot of power-ups it might be a little cluttered, but by the time that happens you should be at the end of the waves.

There was only one thing that kept me from giving this game a 5 star rating. That is the fact that there are no leaderboards or highscore tables. After hours of trying, I finally found a strategy that worked and to my dismay after clearing all 50 waves all I could do was restart or pick another map. I was bummed to say the least. I know minis can’t have online functions but a local highscore table would have been nice.

This game does all the little things right, I was impressed by small stuff like the background music softening when the game is paused. It really shows that the devs put a lot of thought into this title and they didn’t just try to rush a port. It may get under your skin, but when you finally find a strategy that works and you clear the stage, you really feel like you have accomplished something. There are not many games where you can say that.

Screens and Info

Last Thursday we brought you the news that Vector TD was coming to minis in the near future. Well after talking with the Community Manager over at Candystand.com, Robin Yang, we have some news about the title.

The first bit of info is probably the one most of you care about, the release date. Well if you live in the EU you are getting this game on January 21st. The rest of us will have to wait a bit longer due to the way that Sony handles certification in other regions. We were told that the game should be out by February at the lastest in the US.

The game consists of 8 maps, all from the original Vector TD, along with all the towers. The control scheme has been changed a bit to fit the PSP. Because there is no touch screen or mouse you will have to select on the map where you want to place a tower with the D-Pad. You will then be prompted to select the tower you wish to place. Robin tells us that everyone actually really likes this control scheme.

Here is a little glimpse of what the story will be like. Yes there is a story.

The year is 2067, Earth is under attack from a race we have codenamed “Vectoids”. Over the last few years we have managed to refine our abilities to defend ourselves, but we do not know the origins of these Vectoids, or why they are attacking us.

VectorTD is the codename for a computer simulation designed by one of our top boffins, Professor David Scott. The simulation is designed to train commanders in the art of defending facilities from the ongoing threat of the Vectoids. The simulator comes compiled with 8 of the most common paths used by these facilities and the full range of attacking towers at their disposal.

The aim of the simulation is to eliminate the Vectoid threat before they reach the end of the path. You do this by constructing towers along the path. Success is not based solely on the types of towers you select, but where you place them and what upgrade and bonus options you take.

There are seven different types of Vecotoid for you to take out. Each of them having their own strengths and weaknesses.

Blue Spinners
Blue Spinners are the most common type of Vectoid. We have found that blue lasers inflict the most damage, however they show resistance to purple lasers.

Red Shredders
One of the first types of Vectoid encountered. We quickly found that red lasers and rockets caused the most damage, green lasers seem to do very little damage.

Green Flyers
Fortunately all our defenses can cope with air targets, the red lasers do not do so well, but green lasers do heavy damage.

Yellow Sprinters
These are a real pain! They travel much faster than all of the other Vectoid types, fortunately our blue laser based towers can slow them.

Big Purple Box
Don’t let the simple geometry of this Vectoid mislead you, it is as tough as the best of them, its main weakness is purple lasers, but seems to resist attack from blue.

Hard Grey + Bonus
This Vectoid has caused us the most problems, we think it is coated with some sort of armor. The only good news is that it is quite rare and that they seem to need an external power source. Destroy the yellow power cell to get a bonus point.

So if you are in the mood for some more tower defending and have access to the European PSN Store be sure to check this out in the coming weeks.
